A look into the hoaxes and dubious genesis tales of cult artists

Identity is a complex thing in the social media age. There are of course perfectly valid arguments that even artists who present themselves under their own name still do so through an elaborately calculated and managed sense. In an era when bands and artists spew out meaningless hashtag politics to score online woke points, is it any less fake to simply lie about your entire existence under the guise of character? It balances an interesting and occasionally perilous line between exploring identity and being exploitative; between wily marketing and desperate tactics to do what it takes to get yourself heard and seen. So it asks the question: playfulness or perniciousness?

So does buying into the myth, as long as the music is good, supersede a need for truth? Does authenticity matter if the yarn or the art is good enough?

There’s no trap as deadly as the trap you set for yourself.

SHATTER

Ocasionally, something will happen that will change your opinion of someone irrevocably, that will shatter the ideal you’ve built around a person and force you to see them for all the fallible and human creature they really are.

MISS ME, MISTER?

Missed me, missed me, now you've got to kiss me
If you kiss me, mister, I might tell my sister
If I tell her, mister, she might tell my mother
And my mother, mister, she might tell my father
And my father mister, he won't be too happy
And he'll have his lawyer come up from the city and arrest you, mister
So I wouldn't miss me if you get me, mister, see

TRAUMA BONDING

Badmouth, sad mouth, you were an unhappy child
That doesn't make your lying tongue alright
Wash it out, wash it out, wash it out
'cause everything is poison
You'll be the unhappy one
Your lips taste of poison
You're gonna be left alone

CURRENT READ: CARL JUNG ON CONSCIOUSNESS

The more that consciousness is influenced by prejudices, errors, fantasies, and infantile wishes, the more the already existing gap will widen into a neurotic dissociation and lead to a more or less artificial life far removed from healthy instincts, nature, and truth. (Carl Jung)

ON LIFE AND FRUSTRATIONS

© Anna Leevia
Tolerance to frustration and setbacks is the most important psychical condition to achieve emotional maturity. Some fortunate people are born with a sweet disposition and are naturally more tolerant to pain and suffering; their path to emotional maturity is, consequently, much easier. But many are less tolerant, and lose control when things don’t go their way; they must be helped to learn how to face and handle the pain inherent to life.
Children must be encouraged to experiment and to understand that, occasionally, failure is a part of life and not a cause for shame. They have to be encouraged to put themselves in other people’s shoes, even those who are suffering, as they’ll develop empathy by feeling for others. Once they lose the fear of feeling the pain inherent to life, they can humbly accept the uncertainty of the human condition: the fact that we know nothing of our future.
People who have a higher tolerance to uncomfortable situations learn to live better with doubt, which is essential to keep the brain “spongelike” and open to the new; they are also able to make honest assessments of themselves, an important skill for their emotional and intellectual evolution throughout life.

"ONLY IN BRAZIL"

One of my favorite albums is Fernanda Abreu's Veneno da Lata. Finally there is a documentary that tells the crazy story that inspired the album: in 1987, shortly after the end of the dictatorship in Brazil, 22 TONS of marijuana vacuum packed in cans were dumped in Rio's coast. Months later, big part of the 15.000 cans started washing ashore Rio and Sao Paulo, bringing happiness to thousands of people that never tried that high quality product - plus, for FREE. A gift from Iemanjá! You can watch the full doku (unfortunately without subtitles) here:

YOU'RE ART NOUVEAU

You fashion words that fools lap up
And call yourself a poet
Tattooed pretense upon your skin
So everyone will know it

You, my sweet, are a fool
You, my sweet, are plain and weak
Go let the other girls
Indulge the crap that you excrete

Declare yourself an honest man
Who needs a chance to prove it
But traps were laid, the bed was made
So obvious you blew it

WHO ARE WE

He felt her curves surrounding his neck
Like a yoke he knows, he'll never forget
The way she cut through his bed
Like a snake would bite through a cave of flesh

But he holds her, though she's broken
He swears he don't care where she's been
He's tired of being human
He wears her close to the bone as though she were his own skin

He shoots from the heart instead of the head
His mouth and his words, they rarely connect
He looks to the past and where his tongue's tread
And he knows he's meant the opposite

Who are we to love at all?

SPIRIT SPIT

You're elevated (connected to the depths of the seven seas)
You're stimulated (I can feel your pulse and now it's part of me)
I'll be creative (anything you want I will forever be)
For you I'll save it

Spiritualize my sensuality, in your eyes, between you and me

MAN AND HIS SYMBOLS

"Man's recurring interest in - almost obsession with - the symbols of the unconscious have a profoundly significant, almost a nourishing and sustaining inner abstraction - wether they occur in the myths and fairy tales or in visual arts, which satisfy and delight us by a constant appeal to the unconscious. "

Carl Jung, Man and His Symbols

Eugen Bleuler

Hysteria, types of pain and abnormal behaviour are in fact symbolically meaningful. They are one way in which the unconscious mind expresses itself, just as it may in dreams, and they are equally symbolic. “Complexes” - repressed emotional themes that can cause constant psychological disturbances or even, in many cases, the symptoms of neurosis. No individual symbolic imafe can be said to have a dogmatically fixed, generalized meaning.
